29+ format has made it to big box.

Postby Kevman » Tue Jul 21, 2015 9:25 am

The new format of 29+ (29" rim diameter x 3" tire width) has made it to big box.
I was in WalMart over the weekend and spied a bike from Huffy. Looks typically low end in the component dept. Freewheel hub instead of cassette. No name discs front and rear. No adjustment on the suspension fork (1 1/8" steerer). big ol meaty 3' knobbies though. I tried a quick fit in store before I got yelled at for wandering. seems smallish.

I wrote Huffy since there is nothing up about the bike online. They responded telling me it is the Warhawk model (# 56256) description given is pretty vague and I asked for more detail.
"29" stl suspension frame-21spd ez fire shifters-Alloy crank,brakes,wheel."
"Fork is suspension- do not have hub spacing, freewheel-Frame size 17"."

I'll see if I can jet by the store this evening and snap a few photos if the bike is still there.
I know at 6'3" this probably isn't a good deal for me ($259?) I extended the stock seat post as far as it would go without being unsafe and couldn't get good leg extension. Maybe a longer post and stem.
Anyway there is my contribution, love the site.

Tried looking up info on this bike on the huffy web site. Couldn't find anything on it. Looking forward to pics of it if you are able to get some.

I saw this today and was like "What the!?" They sure moved fast on that. If anyone gets one, let me know how it holds up.

How wide is the dropout spacing? If it's no bigger than 135mm, you can do this on your own 29er.

Measure up before you buy plus size wheels and tires. The spacing at the tire might not allow a plus size. On my Ascension 29, I have 2.4 tires and I could possibly go 2.5, but I don't see room for a 3.0 even in a 27.5+ size.

A quick measurement on My son's Deception looks like even tighter clearance. The word on plus size bikes according to manufacturers is that even the forks are designed wider for the plus size bikes. I thought when these came out, that the WTB Scraper 27.5+ wheel/tire combo might fit my bike, but I'm pretty well convinced that it would be an extremely close fit, if not impossible to fit. Check the fit on my RST First 29 fork with the 29x2.4 CST Rock Hawk

The clearance around the back tire is very similar, if not a little tighter.
