question time! I have found a great deal on a wheelset but the front hub is 20mm thru axle. can I adapt this to work with my 15qr fork?
Thanks in advance as I know I can always expect some useful info here!

Depends on the specific hub...

Here's something that'd do the job for a Hope hub, might/might not work on other hubs: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=30152

This is pricier, but should work with any hub: http://www.bikebling.com/Chris-King-15m ... n-kits.htm

Hope that helps!

yup the chris king part looks like the ticket. I know that some hubs have interchangable endcaps to use different axle sizes, however I've read a few random posts on mtbr that 20mm hubs are wider than 15 and 9mm making the conversion a bit more complicated. is this true?

Yes, 20mm axles are 110mm wide vs the 100mm of 15mm and 9mm axles.

thanks for the confirmation, thats what i thought. The search continues for an 11speed compatible 15qr wheelset.

Two things... You do realize that most of the current 11 speed compatible wheels are lighter and more expensive models right? Not exactly all mountain types (though they are being introduced, they will still be very high).

The second thing, have you done the comparison of a 1 x 10 (say X9 or XO) vs the new XX1? The 1x10 is more readily compatible with wheels already on the market, and will end up being nearly 25-50% less expensive even when using top end components. The newer X9 Type 2 or the XO Type 2 would make for a great 1x10 setup in my opinion.

11 speed is gonna cost some serious coin. I would price the difference between 10 and 11 and decide. A 1x10 has pretty awesome range of gears. Not sure one more gear would be worth the cost.

The XX1 drivetrain is about $1300-$1400 for the full XX1 setup. I can get it for about $200-$250 less if I want it, but 2x9 is more than enough gearing for me.

Damn. That is expensive. No drivetrain is worth that IMO. I would rather have a smoking set of wheels.

Yeah its a bit of a pipe dream. I just want to make sure i have no regrets when this thing is finished. I would be satisfied with a 1x10 setup as long as I dont have climbing limitations. my primary focus is to build this bike as lightweight as i can afford, so the 1x setup seams like a huge advantage there. my current setup on my HEAVY diamondback is 3x8 and i have been only using the 32t chainring to get a feel for a 1x. I havent actually examined my cassette to see what range i'm actually working with but the 1x8 configuration using a 32t frnt gear isnt quite enough advantage for me on a long uphill haul.
