JYD' s $5 specialized rockhopper build

Postby junkyarddog » Sat Jul 12, 2014 1:24 pm

picked up this rockhopper at a garage sale for $5.....I wanted a hardtail and this bike has rack mounts so I can add a rack....has wrong wheels on it its a 21 speed but the rear wheel is from a 10 speed.... the plan is to use what I can from the V2100 to keep costs low...the plan is to build an urban commuter bike with it

nice score..!!!
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

Quit possibly the best deal ever on this forum. I see people on CL ask for 200 in that condition.

its gonna take some work to make it rideable again.... the rear wheel is totally the wrong wheel, cables are trashed , rear mech is destroyed, bottom bracket has some play so it most likely needs a new one....basicly I am reusing the frame, fork and handlebars and a few other parts... the rest is being pilaged from the V2100

Cyclocross is such a big deal now and that frame is perfect for it... I bet you could get $300 or $400 if you mooched it into a cyclocross bike and put it on eBay or a big city craigslist (like Portland or something). Underslung bars, decent pedals, sealed BB... most of this you have to do anyway. I think it would fetch more that way than as a commuter. :)

Well, to start, I'd say move the rear wheel, derailleur, and brakes over (canti and v-brakes fit the same post). If you've already converted the v2100 to a sealed bb, move that over as well. The stump jumper has a better crankset, so keep that. Not sure of tje condition of the Manitou, but I think they're rebuildable. It used elastomers instead of springs, IIRC. If you wanna go cheap on the cables to get you by, WM has a shifter and brake cable set for 4 or 5 bucks. Cables, shrouds, furrels and ends for that price. I use them a lot. They're okay.

yeah I was thinking along those lines falcon......through some research I found out it is a 97 model...went on bikepedia and printed off the specs.... most of the v2100 is stock.....the rockhoppers shifters are kinda crusty , so I am gonna use the ones form the V2100...... one of the other bikes has tires I think I am gonna use.....1.95 directional small knobbies called trak-tron.....I am gonna try to use as much as I can from the V2100.....putting all the best parts I have on the hopper.

I found the cable set for $6.96 and picked it up along with some other stuff for the other 2 bikes

ok after dinner I went back out and played some more........ turns out the front wheel on the hopper is junk, so I have to use both V2100 wheels... to bad the fork doesnt have a disc brake mount.... so I took the rotor off...... got wheels and tires, plus the rear deraileur done...... heres some pics of the bike and the tread on the tire
