Calling my bike shop tomorrow to find pricing. After having to replace the rear spring (blew out on me), I have to replace the crank bearings. They are making a horrible noise and have about half an inch up and down play. Any suggestions.

What do you mean by the rear spring blew out on you?

On the crank...either its loose or, the bearings are indeed shot....you should be able to tell if you plan to replace it yourself...A good Shimano UN series bottom bracket should work well and serve as an upgrade.

Should say shock not spring. The top blew off when I was coming off of a bump and spewed shock oil all over my bike. Was not the happiest of campers.

Any special tools required to remove this crankset?

Crank arm removal tool, 14mm socket, large pliers (channel locks preferred). You will need a bottom bracket tool to install the sealed unit. Should be 68x113 or 68x118. I'm not sure. Double check the many v2100 build threads to verify.

This is the bottom bracket I used last week on my build:

I used the 68x118 and it worked just fine. I however had to get a friend with the park hcw-4 to remove a piece from the bottom bracket and even he said was on EXTREMELY tight. Other than that and the tools mentioned earlier I was able to get mine off and the new sealed bb on with no hiccups.

Well I didn't want to spend this much money on this damn bike, but the cranks were stripped whenever I got to them. Any ideas on a good crank set?
