Genesis Saber Move to Single Speed Crank?

Postby Noter » Mon Jul 06, 2015 6:48 pm

I've had my used Genesis Saber bike for a year now, and am noticing I never switch out of 2nd gear on the crank set, but I use the 8 speeds on the rear all the time. With this in mind I was thinking about switching to a single speed crank, save some weight and simplify the bike. I saw how lots of people just removed the 1st and 3rd gear rings from the 3 speed crank. I tried that, but the gears seem to be riveted together. I can unscrew the spider face, but I can't get the gears apart to even test out my single speed idea.

What specs do I need to know should I get new cranks?
Crank arm length 170mm
Current teeth on 2nd gear-38
What else?

Bottom bracket. You currently have square type so you would need square crank unless your new crank is only designed to go with a certain bottom bracket make sure it matches and you will need 113x68
