Haro Group 1 SR 1.0 build

Postby blammo585 » Mon Dec 10, 2012 3:40 pm

This is a build I'm going to be working on to try to get my son out to the BMX track with. He shows little interest so it might be wishful thinking, but at least it will give me something to do this winter. I found the Haro frame on eBay and won the auction; the total with shipping for the frame was $53.00. It's scratched up, but there's no dents anywhere, and I like the look and design of the frame. I figured if the paint finish is a big deal then we strip it down and have it repainted.

The fork is a DK Dirt King 1 1/8" threadless fork. I wanted to go with more of a BMX racing fork to keep the weight down, but at the same time I wanted a strong fork, too. When I couldn't get a GT threadless fork I was looking at I decided to make an offer on this DK fork. They accepted my $15.00 offer and after shipping I paid $27.00 for the fork. I didn't think that was too bad. It has cut-outs for a 14mm axle so I will get some adapters to fit a 3/8" axle because I will be getting some lightweight BMX 36's. I don't want a heavy 14mm axle hub. The fork has a welded-in star nut (well it isn't actually a "star nut").

Here's some pics, and I will update as I get more stuff in. My next purchase is going to be a headset and stem so I can put the front end together.

Got a WTB Momentum headset on eBay for around $12 shipped and a GT stem for $15 shipped. The hard part was finding a bolt to fit the threads inside of the fork. Luckily I found a guy talking about a DK fork that he had that was 14mm x 1.5 pitch. Turns out that's correct. I had to go to several hardware stores before I finally found one that was 14mm AND 1.5. Found it at TruValue. I stole the spacers off of my old Mongoose D70R. Now I have to order replacements for that. So far, total spent is about $110.

Got my son's Haro BMX finished. Well, one small item left...a number plate. But I might let him make one out of posterboard or something for his first race which will be free to see if he wants to go back. Total cost was around $260 with about $185 coming out of my pocket (thanks to a $75 Amazon gift card from my mother-in-law for Christmas).

Haro Group 1 SR 1.0 frame (ebay)
DK 1 1/8" fork (ebay)
Haro Sledgehammer handlebars (already had on an old bike)
GT front load stem (ebay)
WTB Momentum ST headset (ebay)
Mongoose grips (Walmart)
Kenda "Comp III" copy tires (Amazon)
Sunlite tubes (Amazon)
Weinmann single-wall 36 alloy rims with Quando alloy hubs (albes.com)
Suntour crankset with Suntour 42 tooth chainring (already had from my XR Pro)
Dicta 16T freewheel (Amazon)
platform pedals (already had from my XR Pro)
Sunlite 1/2 x 1/8 chain (Amazon)
31.6mm alloy seatpost (Amazon)
alloy seatpost clamp (came on the frame when I got it)
GT seat (already had from son's GT Aggressor 1.0 MTB)
Shimano Acera V-brake (Amazon)
Dia-Compe MX99 brake lever (Amazon)
Bell brake cable (Walmart)
Redline Pro/Expert padset (aawyeah.com)
14mm to 3/8" axle adapters (Amazon)

And, oh yeah, a nickel in the end of each grip to act as bar ends to protect the ends of the grips. So I guess you can add $0.10 to the total cost, LOL. I learned that trick long ago from my BMX Plus! magazines.

What's wrong with the headset? I now have 2 of these, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a "regular" headset. For the price you can't beat it.

I have thought about getting another bottom bracket. I threw these cranks on that were from XR Pro just because I had them. I ended up kind of liking the looks of them on this bike, but because they're mountain bike cranks the chainline is off. I was thinking if I switch to a BMX square taper BB that it will bring it in to normal.
