My Cyclocross Build Begins

Postby blkangel » Thu Apr 10, 2014 7:02 pm

Just received my frame and fork in the mail today. Got it for a steal on eBay. It is a little rougher than I had hoped so I will need to get it powder coated. But my powder coater only charges $50 for bike frames including all the prep. He does a fantastic job, everything that needs to be masked is masked, even down to the little rack eyelets. Just amazing for $50.

This build will be slow but will be ready for cyclocross season this fall.

My frame is finally going to the powder coater tomorrow. Going with a color called "Blood Red Urethane". http://www.columbiacoatings.com/store/S ... 20urethane

So far for my build I have a set of wheels which are the original wheels from the Scott. (nothing special, Shimano/Scott hubs with Jalco (Maddux) rims)
Set of Sora brifters
I will be taking the EA70 stem and seatpost from the Leader when cyclocross season starts (will hopefully be building a 29er this winter)

More parts to come but other priorities have been sucking my money out of my wallet.

Dude, I know how you feel. Are you gonna leave the canti brakes on, or convert to v brakes. My nishiki has cantis, but I haven't rode it as of yet, so I don't know the feel of cantis. I kinda want to go ahead and throw my v brakes on, but those cost me $60 from taiwan, and I'm selling the nishiki.

Already sold the canti's on eBay. They were Tektro Oryx which universally get bad reviews. I will be getting some mini V brakes for the build.

Got the frame back from the powder coater. I was picturing it darker but you really cannot go by a website swatch of a color. I like it though, think I am going with a red and blue theme seeing that it is so "red'. Going with a 1x9 setup so I will probably get a blue Race Face Narrow Wide chainring and some other little blue accents, like bottle cage bolts since the frame came sans bolts.

Tektro mini v-brakes ordered and the headset will be ordered tonight.

Okay I am making progress all parts are in or on their way except for my Race Face Narrow Wide Ring.

Quick run down of parts are:
Sora Crankset (which will run a 38t single Race Face ring)
Deore Rear Derailleur
Sora brifters
Tektro Mini V's
Shimano Clipless pedals
Continental Cyclocross tires
Easton EA70 Stem
Titec Hellbent seatpost
Vader Seat
Scott bars
Crappy Shimano/Scott and Maddux Wheels

I came in just over budget but I was not originally counting on powder coating the bike and re stickering it. Without that I would be right at my target build price of $500

Wow!!! Very nice. I am impressed. I only watched one cyclocross race and that was really fun. Not a big deal where we live here in the desert but in the Puget Sound region 200 miles west it's a very big deal!
