Schwinn Varsity 1200?

Been eyeing this bike for awhile... I have a Kent Del Rio that is my "grocery store" bike...it's outfitted w/ a rear rack and large front basket and has served it's purpose well. I live close to a grocery store and it seems silly to always take the car... This bike works great and I have purchased things like 12 packs of soda and other fairly heavy stuff and it has handled it well.

I've been eyeing the Varsity as a road bike to get exercise on. I'm a mountain biker at heart, but buying an inexpensive road bike and giving it a try has recently peaked my interest. Not wanting to invest significant $, I thought this bike might be a good start.

When I first looked at it, the price was $250. It dropped to $229 recently and now has hit the $199 mark... I don't know if they are looking to introduce a new model and/or the price will drop more.

Any opinions on pricing and using this bike for fitness?

Thanks,
Pete

Same story here. This thread pertains to my interests. I'm enjoying my Mongoose MTB, but I've been looking at this 1200 for a while, and the price looks good at $200.

I really like the shape of the frame on the Varsity 1200. My philosophy is to buy a cheap bike with a cool frame and wheels and then upgrade the rest. The frame and wheels are very cool on 1200. My biggest problem is that you can't remove the Schwinn stickers. :/

I am, in general, a big fan of using road bikes for riding on the road. Mostly because I can do 20mph on a road bike with the same effort that only gets me to 15mph on my MTB.

But that is not, in my opinion, conducive to getting "exercise". I have said before that if one wants exercise on a bike then the best thing is to get an old cruiser at Goodwill, let it sit outside and get a nice patina of rust, and ride that 'til you work up a sweat.

Twice around the block should do it... then you can finish the chores the little lady in your life has been after you for the past two weeks. :P

But the Swchwinn 1200 looks sweet to me. :)

Been eyeing this bike for awhile...

They replaced it with this model
http://www.walmart.com/ip/700c-Schwinn- ... n/36992758

- no longer paired spokes
- no triple on the front so it's only a 14 speed now
- now it's a grip shifter

Looked over one at the store itself. Walmart's website is wrong about this new model.

I know. Those are deal breakers for me. Will not purchase this now.

I went around yesterday looking for a green Varsity with paired spokes. I was hoping I could still find one in the store since they've been discontinued. There was a slot labeled for the green 1200, but the bike in the slot was blue and white. I can't even find the blue one on Walmart's website. http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showth ... ?t=1192721 (scroll down a few posts to see the pic)

I didn't buy it because I really wanted a green one. Anyone know where I can get a green one? I'd be very unhappy if I ordered one and they sent me a new one with the plain wheels. Maybe I should just settle on the blue one for $200.

I know you've been looking for a road bike in the $200 range. I found this Volare today:

It's more expensive, but it has all the cool features of the old Varsity 1200, and it could go on sale.

Thanks, I have seen that bike and am mulling it over. Also thinking of the Hyper Spinfusion 700C
