Thanks, I have seen that bike and am mulling it over. Also thinking of the Hyper Spinfusion 700C

Found the Schwinn for $250. Sorry, I'm not a fan of that Hyper Spinfusion. Love the paired spokes on the Schwinn. ... x57vw_wcB#.

I went to one of the Wal Marts in Hattiesburg, MS a week or so ago looking for the Genesis RoadTech. They didn't have it, but they did have the Schwinn Varsity (the blue one). I gave it a good look, liked what I saw and bought it. So far, I love it! The frame is really nice and light, and the rims are very similar to my Vuelta rims on my other bike. The brakes have serious stopping power. The rear derailleur shifts like a dream. The front one is okay (probably fine, but I spent a lot of time trying to adjust it myself - I'm still learning).

This past weekend I went riding with a co-worker and his son who both just got Giant bikes. His son had a flat bar road bike. It had the same rear derailleur as mine. Both had Shimano "trigger" type shifters. The front derailleurs were different but seemed to be about the same quality. The stems on the two bikes appeared to be exactly the same except for the color. Both had side pull brakes. His was 600.00 (I think). Mine was 200.00.

Anyway, its a great bike if you can find one like the one I got. I've ridden probably 100 miles so far on it with no trouble. I've never seen the green ones with the regular wheels. I did see a red and black one at my local Wal Mart, but it was way up on the top shelf.

Damn, I'm jealous! Cool bike. I especially like the Schwinn logo on the inside of the chain stay. Nice touch. Keep us updated.

I had on for 3 years, just sold it 2 months ago (and am still whining about it). Great bike. Very light (some 26 lbs) and effortless to ride thanks to the slim tires. Got mine as a floor model for some $125, but it is definitely worth the $200, considering all the components.

I had my wheel trued once and everything else (cables/shifters/chain etc.) cleaned/adjusted/lubricated) once a year, never had any issues.

Did I mention that I really miss the bike? I had the 'original', black and white with yellow tags on the rim. I bought another bike but the deal fell thru, now I am without a bike, and unless I find a Hybrid (which I can ride on dirt and loose gravel as well) soon, I will get another Schwinn Varsity.

I have owned this bike for about two years now and I wish I had never bought it. I ride a daily commute so I put some miles on the bike. I expected to replace parts but the frame cracked so the bike is just a paper weight now. Some other problems I had with the bike.... The bottom bracket wore out in about six months they covered it under warranty but the guy at the bike shop told me not to waste my time and to just replace it with a sealed bottom bracket so I did. The crank arm bent after a little fall on a greenway. I was surprised at this one. The rear axel snapped in half after hitting a curb. And finally the frame cracked at the derailleur hanger. I do not know when the frame cracked or how but the people at Schwinn insisted it was because I road it without the derailleur hanger bolt. I suspect the crack happened first and this caused the bolt to loosen and eventually fall out. When I removed the wheel the hanger fell off and exposed the crack in the frame. I need to find a cheap replacement frame. Any suggestions?

That Is Sickening... THAT is about to break completely Off. I agree completely that the crack probably happened first and the bolt became very loose.

Honestly, the luck you've had, I'd be thinking about going with a steel frame, especially if I had to replace it at a low price. Older Craigslist used bikes have many interchangeable parts, but there will invariably be some parts that will not work on a new frame. Good candidates are the older Schwinn Chromoly frame bikes. I have a 25 year old Schwinn CrossPoint with no frame problems, the bike weighs about 26lb. I realize part of the appeal of the Varsity is the aluminum frame, but with a cracked frame, I'd be reluctant to go right back to another of the same.

Schwinn frames have a limited lifetime warranty, so my suggestion is to follow it, unless you don't qualify for it of course.

Frames are guaranteed against manufacturing defect (defined as a defect in materials or workmanship as delivered with the product) for as long as the original purchaser owns the bicycle, subject to the terms and conditions of this limited warranty. If frame failure should occur due to faulty materials or workmanship during the guarantee period, the frame will be replaced with the same or most nearly compatible frame then available. For frame replacement under the limited warranty, please contact the authorized dealer the bicycle was purchased from. Authorized dealers will contact us to initiate a warranty claim on your behalf.

I don't think that the frame cracked because of the bolt not being there.

Since the axle was stressed to the point of breaking, at that point the axle was trying to bend/break the dropout because the axle was in two pieces.
A bent axle by itself can eventually break even a good frame, especially if it is ridden for a while, since the bent axle puts repeated cycles of bending stress on the dropout as it is ridden.
An axle usually gets bent a long time before it breaks, so the frame dropout sees thousands of bending cycles as the mileage accumulates while riding the bent (but still unbroken) axle.

Freewheel-style hubs present this problem with bent axles, so are less suitable for harder riding or heavier loads as compared to cassette-freehubs. The problem gets worse as the freewheel becomes wider, or from adding a luggage rack.

If there is a defect with this bicycle, it seems to me that the design of the hub is the problem, not anything related to a "manufacturing defect". Note that some freewheel hubs with either quick-release hollow axles (or with 3/8" solid axles) can be upgraded with a 10mm solid axle (and matching-size cones and locknuts if needed). I went this route with the wheels on my Mongoose Hondo mountainbike, and haven't bent the axle on those wheels in over 800 miles of off-road riding. I also used a shorter stack of spacers on the freewheel end of the axle to reduce the unsupported overhang length of the axle, so the chain nearly touches the frame now with no unneeded excess clearance there.
