New purchase

Postby Mcholla » Tue Feb 03, 2015 9:56 pm

I have been looking to try out a road bike, but have a limited budget. Right now I keep coming back to the gmc Denali 700c and the genesis 700c. Anybody have any insight into either of those bikes, or a different bike in the same ish price range that would be a better starting point?

Thank you.

The 700c Schwinn Varsity 1200 is a sharp looking bike. Aluminum frame, better brakes, similar price to the 2 you listed.

I rrrrrreally like the green one :D

I think I am leaning towards the Gensis:

I looked at it in the store the other day seems nicer to me than the denali.

Does any body have any experience with this bike?

It's the same frame as the Denali. So, it still has 135mm rear spacing. Same wheels, seat, derailleurs, but stem shifters. I bought a useddDenali pro last summer. Had STI shifters, microshift rear derailleur, but tourney front derailleur. Still 135mm rear, but 2x8 drivetrain and toe clip pedals.

Yes and no. It still has a freewheel. The 135mm spacing made it odd to upgrade wheels, and the bike is still a bit heavy. Lighter than the base Denali, but not by much. I've changed the crankset front the stock 53/4 8th a 50/32 sram compact crankset. Bought new wheels and brakes, and had to but a new front derailleur. Swapped to ergo dropbars, and got the venzo shoe and pedal combo. Only rode it once or twice stock. It was my first road bike in 20 years or so but they aren't my favorite to begin with.

I'm kinda happy with it now, but I've never liked any bike as it came stock.

It is far better than the base Denali, though. Another bike too look for used would be a schwinn prelude. I've been hunting one for a while, but can never find one.
