WalMart Fixed Gear $99

Postby wa_desert_rat » Wed Aug 17, 2011 7:42 am

Wife and I spent two days riding the "Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes" near Kellogg, Idaho and made a quick trip to WalMart in Kellogg to stock up on enough groceries to make dinner. I headed to the bicycle area and found this little gem in the aisle for $99. It has a standover of about 31-inches. It's a bit heavy but very attractive. Seemed that the BB was a little tight when I spun the pedals but that's fixable as long as you don't ride it too long. I would have bought it but the wife nixed the idea saying that I already had too many bicycles. LOL[

Actually mongoose does make one like this. Not quite as contrasted, but they have the detain. Its a fixie with a flip flop hub. They used to make a black and white one called the cachet. Both pretty nice. The detain kinda makes me wanna go with a bare aluminum frame.

Yes, I already loved the Detain (either getting it and uprgading, or getting a Schwinn Hornet cruiser, haven't decided), but I like uniqueness and wild colors, so this bike fits my style!

I'm only amazed that I found it in, of all places, Kellogg, Idaho... and for $99! Kellogg, by the way, is home to a ski area called "Sun Mountain" which is, during the summer. a gondola-fed downhiller MTB area. LOL.

Kellogg has at least one reasonably good - and well stocked - LBS.

At any rate, I figured that for $99 I could hardly go wrong but my wife brought up the inescapable fact that I already have 2 road bikes. And the fixie was a tad heavy (I'm not sure why). Plus I would have had to replace the cheesy pedals right away... and the bottom bracket as well.

Still.... cute bike... would have turned heads in my home town. :D

I liked the Mongoose Cachet a little better. Here's a link to a nice review and a pic of the Cachet without the decals. NICE bike!!!!!
